A long time dream trip! Joanna and David traveled to both sides of Patagonia and hit many of the biggest hikes and must-do activities.
Los pingüinos les da la bienvenida! We were welcomed by many Magellanic penguins on our tour to Isla Magdalena, located in the Strait of Magellan.
Our first trek of the trip was the famous W Route in Torres del Paine on the Chilean side of Patagonia. We did the route East to West over 4 nights and 5 days. Our weather on the Base Torres hike was rainy and cloudy, but after waiting over an hour in the cold wind, we were able to catch a glimpse of most of the towers. Each day brought a smorgasbord of weather (sun, rain, wind, snow, etc), and distance markers never could be trusted... David got the flu on the next to last day and had to miss his appointment with Glacier Grey - we had to save something for another trip!
A quick overnight trip at the Nibepo Aike Estancia and Mini-Trekking expedition on the Perito Moreno Glacier. We never knew the glacier can actually move at a rate of 1-2m per day at it's maximum. The glacier has been receding in recent years, but is still unfathomably large at 4.4 km wide and extending up into the valleys and ice fields out of view.
Amazing peaks all around, we luckily had several days in the El Chalten area and were able to adjust our schedule to see the Fitz Roy Peak and the Torres on days where they weren't completely obscured. We broke the main trek into two days to be able to see both Laguna de los Tres, Fitz Roy at Sunrise, as well as Laguna Torres.
